In the meaning of 'CAD/CAE Exchange' (CAX), the .cax filename extension is primarily associated with the VCollab CAE/CAD Data File (.cax) file type/format. The CAX format was developed by Visual Collaboration Technologies Inc. in an attempt to provide a portable, compact, and sufficiently lightweight file format for Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) data. To support the CAX format in CAD/CAE applications, VCollab provides their VMoveCAE and VMoveAPI software.
The .cax file is a VCollab 3D model. It uses VCollab's proprietary CAX container as a compact storage for geometry data, meshes, simulation results, animations, etc., supplemented with metadata and annotations. When exported as CAX, 3D models or CAE simulation results become portable and can be imported in any CAX-enabled application as well as visualized using the VCollab Presenter viewer (free and paid versions exist). With VCollab Presenter installed, .cax files can be directly viewed in web browsers, used in Microsoft Office documents, and opened with a double-click.
Apart from that, the .cax extension is used by EFILive, an advanced commercial program by EFILive Limited (R.Myers, P.Blackmore) for scanning and tuning engine control modules (ECM) of EFI-equipped motor vehicles. In plain text, the .cax file contains additional and/or custom calibration parameters for a specific ECM type and vehicle make/model. To be used with EFILive, the CAX files are placed into the "Program Files\EFILive\V7.5\Calibrations" directory. Most of such files are user-made and published on tuning forums.
The .cax extension was also used in previous versions (14 and earlier) of the commercial CAD/CAE package cadwork to denote exported 3D models (.cax), viewable with the integrated Lexocad viewer. In cadwork 15, Lexocad was replaced with the cadwork 3D Viewer, and 3D models were exported in a different format denoted with the extensions .ivx or .ivz.
