What is the .CACHE file type?

The .cache filename extension belongs quite self-explanatory to cache files. This extension is not tied up with any specific file type or format, it rather serves to semantically point out to the function of a file.

A cache file is a temporary file created in a local filesystem to speed up repeated access to the same data. Caching is widely used in operating systems, web browsers and many other software products. For instance, all web browsers create local cache files (some with the .cache extension) with any data transferred from the Web to save network traffic.

CACHE files are part of the caching mechanism of the application that created them in the first place. Many .cache files would have rather cryptic filenames and totally different formats. Such filenames are often assigned for the purpose of tying up .cache files with the session's context.

CACHE files are not meant to be directly interacted with by the user, but they do take up storage space, so many applications (incl. web browsers) allow purging their caches. CACHE files can be safely deleted manually as well.
