The .bnp extension is primarily encountered in association with image management files (.bnp) created and used by digital Sony AVCHD camcorders. Such HD cameras use a proprietary image-management technology that involves creation of multiple metadata files per each video clip actually recorded.
Necessary for proper handling of media files by the device, image management files (.bnp, .inp, .int, etc.) are all located in the "AVF_INFO" directory at the root of the camera's main storage.
A .bnp file is a relatively large (up to several hundred Mb) binary file that contains metadata for the actual video file. Although BNP (INP, INT) files are often mistaken for media files, they do not hold any video data. BNP files are service files, handled automatically by the camera's firmware.
Deletion or modification of any image management files (.bnp, etc.) makes it impossible to play/view media files directly with the camera—all media files can, however, be transferred for viewing/playback on a computer.
Alternatively, the .bnp extension is also used to denote game resource archive files (.bnp) in the Ryzom massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). BNP files contain game objects (shapes, textures, sounds, music, etc.) that are used to build virtual sandbox universes for the Ryzom game. Various tools for handling BNP files are available, developed in the scope of the Ryzom Core open-source project.
