The .jpg extension is universally associated with the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) image format and the JPG file type. JPEG is one of the oldest and well-established digital bitmap image formats. It is a binary format that uses a lossy compression method, boasts a high compression ratio (up to 25:1) and is best suited for high-color (24-bit) photographic images. Modern revisions of the JPEG standard use effective techniques to counter most compression-caused artifacts.
JPEG has long become a de facto standard for non-professional bitmap image exchange, especially in digital photography. Despite the advent of PNG, JPG is still the most popular bitmap image file type on the Web.
A .jpg file is a digital JPEG bitmap image. A legacy of the 8.3 naming convention, the .jpg extension means the same as .jpeg. JPG files use the standard JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF) and are usually quite compact in size.
JPG images are recognized and displayed by all image viewers, web browsers, office applications etc. There are a large number of viewing, organizing and editing tools for JPG files on all known platforms.
