The .wma extension is linked to the Windows Media Audio (WMA) audio file format, audio codec and file type. WMA is a proprietary audio compression format and file type developed by Microsoft in competition to RealAudio and MP3.
WMA files contain one track per file compressed with one of the four sub-versions of the WMA codec (WMA, WMA Pro, WMA Lossless, or WMA Voice). The most commonly used WMA codec uses lossy compression like MP3.
In most cases, a .wma audio file would come internally packaged into an Advanced System Format (ASF) container, which enables storage of extensive metadata and offers support for Digital Rights Management (DRM) techniques.
WMA is actively promoted by Microsoft, being the default media format in Windows Media Player (WMP). WMA codecs are integrated in WMP distribution but are also available separately or via various codec packs to enable WMA support outside WMP. In Windows, the default system association for WMA would be WMP.
Thanks to its popularity in Windows, WMA enjoys wide support in MacOS and Linux.
